The aim of the workshop was to plan various activities to uplift the socio economic status of the farmers of the region with special focus on water availability. On the occasion, PMAS-AAUR, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad was the chief guest while Dr. John Blackwell, Project Leader of ACIAR was the guest of honor.
While addressing as chief guest PMAS-AAUR, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Rai Niaz Ahmad said that there is dire need for groundwater management, evaluation and management of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, development of methodologies and technologies to improve crop per drop. Vice Chancellor said that country is very much concerned about the water security and we have to join hands in order to combat the challenge. If we improve our water efficiency, we can double the areas for agriculture production, he added.
It may be called that PMAS-AAUR, Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA), Faisalabad Water Management Research Center (FWMRC) is already working on a project titled Optimizing Canal and Groundwater Management in collaboration with ACIAR. On the occasion, project partners also discussed and identify the opportunities for equitable distribution of canal and groundwater to improve livelihoods through maximizing crop production and managing Stalinization in irrigated landscapes. They also agreed to develop tools capable of analyzing hydrological & economic water management and to develop improved canal and groundwater management options. They also discuss the issues and future prospects of the project and agreed to support the farmers at field level.
